On November 21, 1981, Susann Gerstein, a stay at home mom, and two friends opened small change, to make it easier for parents to recycle everything their children need and outgrow. This friendly neighborhood shop has become a gathering place for mothers and grandmothers looking for brand name and imported clothes, shoes, dancewear, cleats, toys, videos, strollers, cribs, high chairs, exersaucers and joggers – most at well under half the original price.

After so many years in business, many second and even some third generation families are shopping and consigning at small change. Women who used to come in with their moms now come in with their kids!

You’ll save hundreds over time shopping here and you'll earn hundreds more by selling your children's used items. The ground rules are simple: Make an appointment to bring in fall/winter clothes (from mid July – mid December) or spring/summer clothes (from February 1 – June 1) or for equipment, furniture, toys etc. that are in nearly perfect condition. You can bring 25-30 items per appointment whether it’s your recently-worn Pea in the Pod wardrobe, your 6 year old’s Gymboree jeans or your 15 year old’s Abercrombies or a combination. There’s a $4.00 fee per appointment; a 50% - 50% split for items selling under $100; a 60% - $40% split for items over $100 (60% to the consigner!); you can shop against your credit balance during your 2 month consignment period or take your money at the end of the 2 months.

There’s always a large selection of handcrafted and new gift items like tie dye shirts, handknit dolls, wooden puzzles and toys, lullabye CDs, barettes and gift certificates available in all denominations. Many clients have been outfitting their kids for years by using money earned from their consignment sales at small change. Because Reston is such a multi-cultural neighborhood, you can find one of a kind items from all over the world. With 1,200 active consigners each year, small change has become a community institution at Lake Anne Plaza. It has been cited as one of the best consignment shops for children, mothers-to-be and the whole family in the Annual Washington Families Survey, and winner of the 1992 Best of Reston Award for Community Service & Business Excellence for its generous donation to families in need.

We now limit toys (new or used) to only those that have been certified as lead-free.
